Representing Africa

The picture above is a typical example of how "Africa" has been represented to the West; uncivilized, barbaric, aggressive, dangerous -- a place and people to be settled, tamed, and civilized.

Sadly this colonial construction of many parts of the African continent been a reason to colonize parts of "Africa" -- a history that the post-colonial nations are still attempting to understand and correct.

"Africa" itself isn't just a continent -- it is an idea. There are many "Africas" and many multi-varied representations of Africa. This is true for the Westernization of the Church in Africa as they sort out autonomously and independently what an "African" Christianity looks like.

The TornHeart Africa scholarship at Eugene Bible College is attempting to help Malawians and Mozambiqueans in Africa to come and receive a biblical education and go back to their homeland and work out what it means to be an "African" Christian in an "African" context, equipped with the tools of a biblical education.
